Founder story
How Vetano Started
One conversation changed everything.
In 2023, our founder Chris Fairley was caught in a big tech layoff. After 20 years in tech, he found himself stuck in a hiring process that was not working.
After one too many disappointing experiences, he started thinking differently: what if candidates could explain and show their skills on video before the interview?
At the time, Chris was doing whatever he could to keep going, including selling high-end window shades on 100% commission.
One evening, after a long day with zero sales, he went over to a neighbor’s house hoping to finally make one.
He did not make the sale.
But he did talk about an idea he could not stop thinking about.
That neighbor had retired after 38 years at a Fortune 5 company, where he led mobile research, earned a PhD, and held 32 patents. After hearing the idea, he invited Chris to sit down and tell him more.
Two days later, they met again.
That neighbor handed Chris $5,000 and told him to stop selling shades and start the company.
Chris registered the business that same day.
That idea became Vetano.
This story still shapes how we think about hiring today: first impressions matter, proof builds confidence, and one conversation can change everything.
